Football season has arrived! And that means my husband is VERY happy. He grew up playing football and was the starting quarterback all four years of high school. He was that popular kid that everyone loved. (Not much has changed there, he is still the life of the party.) I secretly think he wishes he could have gone pro…but life got in the way. He ended up putting school first and not going out of state to play in college.

In a very real way, I am grateful that he never moved away because then our paths would have never crossed. However, I know that a little piece of his heart will always belong to football. So I am all too happy to sit by his side and watch the game, if only to relive some of those memories with him. I do my best to understand it all but I have to admit I really should just stick to what I am good at; the football snacks!

You can bet that when Sunday football rolls around I have loads of treats up my sleeves to keep everyone happy! I don’t know if it is very ladylike of me considering how messy they are, but I have an enormous love for chicken wings! I love the crispy skin, the juicy meat and the wide array of sauces that you can dunk them in. I was picking up snacks for Sunday Football at Sam’s Club this week and I spotted a big ol’ 28 pack of Coca-Cola. Perfect for game day! I LOVE Sam’s Club. It always takes me an hour to get out of there because I want to buy everything in sight. I am a big advocate of not making everything from scratch when I am entertaining so I let Sam’s Club help me out with some of the heavy lifting. I always pick up those little brownie bites, a veggie tray and a fruit platter. When I am rushing, I love using their easy pick up system. I just hop online, place my order and they put it all together for me! Popping in and picking it up just takes a few minutes. I usually make the rest of the menu myself…and what is a football party without chicken wings?!

I love using soda in my signature rib recipe so I decided to try it out with these wings. My oh my, these were incredible. The perfect blend of sweet and spicy. I have tried both frying and baking my wings but truly love the results I get from baking so much better. It is half the work and far less messy! While the wings bake it gives me plenty of time to whip up the sauce and clean up any last minute messes from Stella before guests arrive.

Every time I make this BBQ sauce I am always asked for the recipe so I have started making extras and give them away as cute little football favors at our Sunday football parties! I have included a free printable for you all to use if you would like to do the same! Our guests love them and I know yours will too!

Ingredients
  • Crispy Baked Wings:
  • 2 lbs. Chicken Wings
  • 1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt
  • Non Stick Cooking Spray
  • Sweet and Spicy BBQ Sauce:
  • 1 Cup Ketchup
  • ½ Cup Coca-Cola
  • 1 Teaspoon Smoked Paprika
  • ½ Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper (Or less for not as spicy)
  • 1 Tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar
  • ¼ cup Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 Teaspoon Garlic Salt
  • ¼ Cup Brown Sugar
Instructions
  1. Crispy Baked Wings:
  2. Adjust your oven racks to the lower middle section and the upper middle section. Preheat the oven to 250°. With a paper towel, pat the chicken wings dry. Line a large baking sheet with foil and coat with non stick cooking spray. Place the chicken wings, baking powder and salt in a large ziplock bag, shaking to coat evenly. Be sure that they are coated evenly as you don't want clumps of baking powder on just a few of the wings otherwise they will not crisp up. Place the chicken wings on the prepared baking sheet, fat side up. Place the baking sheet on the lower middle rack and bake for 30-35 minutes. Meanwhile prepare sweet and spicy bbq sauce (recipe below). Increase the heat to 425° and move the wings to the upper middle rack, baking for an additional 45-50 minutes. Brush the wings with the sweet and spicy bbq sauce and return to the oven for 5 minutes. Serve immediately with extra bbq sauce if desired.
  3. Sweet and Spicy BBQ Sauce:
  4. Combine all the above ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil over medium heat. Reduce to a simmer and allow the sauce to cook for 5-7 minutes. Allow the sauce to cool and then transfer to a clean jar and refrigerate.
